Have you ever wondered if there’s an organization like JASMEE out there in other parts of the world?
As the need for effective EMP education grows in Japan, looking beyond our borders could help expand our horizons. For those of us in JASMEE, one of the most similar organizations is the European Association for Language Teachers for Healthcare (EALTHY; sounds like healthy without the “h”).
What exactly is EALTHY?
Just like us, EALTHY is a professional association dedicated specifically to English education for healthcare. Also, just like us, they focus on the intersection of healthcare and language.
EALTHY Activities
→ Global Networking & Conferences: They run a biennial international English for Healthcare Conference, bringing together educators and researchers from across the globe.
→ Professional Development: They host regular webinars on hot topics like clinical communication, AI in the classroom, and OET preparation.
→ Resource Bank: Members get access to a great repository of lesson plans, research articles, and teaching materials tailored for various healthcare contexts.
→ They also have a blog, similar to ours. Check it out! EALTHY Blog
My experience at the 6th International English for Healthcare Conference in Brighton
To really see what EALTHY is all about, I had the privilege of attending and presenting at their 6th conference at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School in the UK back in September 2024. The atmosphere was incredibly inspiring!
I presented my research on history-taking skills assessment rubric development. Sharing findings with this diverse international audience was a great experience. The feedback and discussions we had with global EMP experts really helped me see that some of the challenges we face in Japan are actually shared worldwide.

As I hope you all know, this summer’s 29th JASMEE Conference theme is “Toward an EMP Model Core Curriculum—Balancing Standardization and Personalization.” Wouldn’t it be nice if JASMEE members could somehow learn more about the topic from international experts such as those from EALTHY?
Well guess what… To help bring a global perspective to this discussion, we are absolutely thrilled that the President of EALTHY, Professor John Skelton, will be joining us in Osaka as an invited symposium speaker and panelist!
The EALTHY conferences (such as the 7th English for Healthcare Conference in Kraków) are excellent opportunities to share your Japanese EMP research globally.
As we get ready for the 29th JASMEE Conference in July 2026, let’s think about more ways to connect JASMEE with our international peers in the spirit of friendship and collaboration!
