New Release: Updated NEMP Medical English Question Collection (2025 Edition)

In a previous EMP Blog post in 2024, Professor Jun Iwata kindly provided the JASMEE community with the first iteration of a PowerPoint file of English questions from past National Examinations for Medical Practitioners (NEMP).

We are pleased to announce the release of the updated PowerPoint resource: “医師国家試験_医学英語関連問題_過去問集_2025年版”.

This updated collection now includes English-related questions from the most recent 119th National Examination for Medical Practitioners (NEMP 2025), with questions dating back to the 108th exam.

How to Use This Resource

To get the most out of your study/teaching session, we recommend the following:

  • Use Presentation Mode: Open the file in PowerPoint and start the “Slide Show” (Presentation Mode).

  • Active Recall: The answers are hidden behind animations. This allows users “thinking time” to consider the clinical case and the English options before clicking to reveal the correct answer.

Analysis of Trends (108th–119th NEMP)

Based on an analysis of the collection, here are the key takeaways regarding the direction of Medical English in the National Exam:

1. Shift Toward Clinical Reasoning

There is a clear transition from testing simple vocabulary to testing practical clinical knowledge. Questions now frequently use authentic medical formats, such as:

  • Referral letters (英文紹介状)

  • Medical charts and clinical images

  • Case reports

2. Breakdown of the 119th NEMP (2025)

The most recent exam featured five questions that exemplify this clinical shift:

  • 119A-3: Mapping the “Danger Zone! Can you identify the most frequent site for hypertensive bleeds in the brain? This question tests your ability to link pathology directly to neuroanatomy under pressure.

  • 119B-35: Practical Emergency Medicine. Can you translate clinical findings into the correct diagnostic action? This question requires you to look past the symptoms and choose the single most definitive procedure from a list of five common interventions.

  • 119C-18: Myth Buster. We all know mosquitoes are the primary vector, but do you know how malaria cannot be spread? This question tests your ability to distinguish between vector-borne myths and clinical reality.

  • 119F-19: Screening Technology. Tandem mass spectrometry is a cornerstone of neonatal care, but do you know which specific metabolic disorder it is designed to catch? This question tests your technical precision.

  • 119F-25: More Than Medicine. Health isn’t just the absence of disease—it’s a multifaceted state of being. Can you recall the exact word the WHO uses to complete its foundational definition of health? It’s a term every international medical professional must know.

3. Increasing Question Volume

Since the 108th exam, the number of English-related questions has increased to 4 to 5 questions per year, since 2020, emphasizing that English is consistently an important part of the assessment.
