New Guidelines for the EMP Blog: Republishing Responsibly with Creative Commons Licenses

At the Japan Society for Medical English Education (JASMEE), we believe in the power of shared knowledge. The EMP Blog was launched in January 2024 as a platform for teachers, researchers and students of medical English to share ideas, insights, and resources. To further foster this spirit of collaboration while respecting authors’ rights, we are pleased to announce the launch of new republishing guidelines for the EMP Blog.

These guidelines help clarify how EMP Blog articles may be republished by third parties—whether in academic newsletters, educational websites, institutional bulletins, or other media. In addition, we now include a license notice on each article to indicate the terms under which it may be shared or adapted.

Each Article Has Its Own License

Every article published on the EMP Blog will clearly display the license selected by the author. Authors are encouraged to choose from among the six widely recognized Creative Commons (CC) licenses. These licenses provide flexible options for how an article can be reused, with clear conditions for attribution, modification, and commercial use.

Whether you’re looking to cite an EMP Blog article in your own newsletter or include it in teaching materials, it’s now easier than ever to understand your rights and responsibilities as a republisher.

New Republishing Guidelines Now Available

To support this change, we have published a new page outlining the EMP Blog Republishing Guidelines. These guidelines are designed to ensure clarity and consistency, both for our contributors and for those who wish to share our content. Here are the key points:

1. Respect the selected license

Each article’s license will state whether and how it may be reused. If the author has chosen a Creative Commons license, you can republish the article as long as you follow the terms of that license (e.g., attribution, no commercial use, no modifications). If the article is marked All Rights Reserved, you must obtain written permission before using it.

2. Provide proper attribution

When republishing an article, credit must be given to the author(s), their institution(s), and JASMEE. A link back to the original article must be included for online republication. For print publications, the JASMEE website URL should be listed.

Here is an example for the article you are now reading:
This article by Raoul Breugelmans, Kansai Medical University, was originally published under a CC BY-ND license on the EMP Blog of the Japan Society for Medical English Education (JASMEE). Read the original article here.

3. Be cautious with images and media

Images, charts, and other non-text content may carry separate licenses or restrictions. Unless explicitly permitted by the license, avoid reusing these elements—or replace them with your own.

4. No bulk republishing

Systematic reproduction of EMP Blog content (e.g., scraping all articles) is not allowed. Republishing must be selective and editorial in nature.

5. Notification is welcome

While not required, we appreciate being notified when an article is republished. This helps us track how EMP Blog content is reaching new audiences.

Understanding Creative Commons Licenses

If you’re new to Creative Commons, here’s a quick overview. CC licenses are free, standardized tools that let authors retain copyright while allowing others to use their work under specific conditions. They strike a balance between the rights of creators and the public’s interest in sharing and reusing content.

Here are the six main CC licenses available:

CC BY (Attribution)
Others can copy, distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon the work—even commercially—as long as they give credit.
CC BY-SA (Attribution-ShareAlike)
Like CC BY, but adapted works (derivatives) must be licensed under the same terms.
CC BY-ND (Attribution-NoDerivatives)
Others can reuse the work for any purpose, including commercially, but it must remain unchanged and be credited.
(This is the default license for EMP Blog articles if no choice is made.)
CC BY-NC (Attribution-NonCommercial)
Others can use the work non-commercially, with attribution.
CC BY-NC-SA (Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike)
Like CC BY-NC, but derivatives must be shared under the same license.
CC BY-NC-ND (Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives)
The most restrictive license: allows downloading and sharing with attribution, but no commercial use or modifications are allowed.

These licenses give authors the freedom to set boundaries while enabling others to reuse and amplify their work within those boundaries.

We invite you to explore the new republishing guidelines, and we hope this initiative will make it easier to share EMP Blog content with new audiences.

EMPブログ記事再利用に関する新しいガイドラインのご案内

日本医学英語教育学会（JASMEE）は、知識を共有する力を信じています。EMPブログは、医学英語を学ぶ教師、研究者、学生のための情報共有プラットフォームとして、2024年1月に開設されました。著者の権利を尊重しながら協働の精神をより一層育むために、このたびEMPブログの記事再利用に関する新しいガイドラインを策定しましたのでお知らせいたします。

記事ごとに異なるライセンスを明記

EMPブログに掲載されるすべての記事には、著者が選択したライセンスが明示されます。著者には、6種類の国際的に認知されたクリエイティブ・コモンズ（CC）ライセンスの中から自由に選択していただきます。これらのライセンスは、帰属、改変、商用利用などに関する条件を明確にした上で、柔軟な再利用を可能にします。

ニュースレターや教材でEMPブログの記事を利用したい場合でも、今後はライセンス表示により、再利用の可否や条件がより明確になります。

新しい再利用ガイドラインを公開しています

この変更を支援するため、EMPブログ記事の再利用に関するガイドラインを新たに公開しました。執筆者・再利用者の双方にとって、より明確で一貫性のある運用を目指した内容となっています。主なポイントは以下の通りです。

記事を再利用する際は、著者名、所属機関、そしてJASMEEを明記してください。オンラインの場合は、元記事へのリンクを必ず記載してください。印刷物の場合は、JASMEEの公式ウェブサイトURLを掲載してください。

3. 画像やメディア素材の取り扱いに注意

記事中の画像、図表、その他の非テキスト素材には、別のライセンスや制限が設けられている場合があります。ライセンスに明示されていない限り、これらの要素の再利用は避けるか、自作のものに差し替えてください。

4. 一括再利用は禁止

EMPブログの全記事を一括して再利用・転載する行為（例：スクレイピング等）は禁止されています。再利用は編集的意図に基づいた選択的なものでなければなりません。

5. 再利用に関する連絡

必須ではありませんが、記事の再利用時にはJASMEEへのご連絡を歓迎します。再利用状況を把握することで、より多くの読者に情報を届ける助けになります。

クリエイティブ・コモンズ（CC）ライセンスとは？

CCライセンスは、著作者が著作権を保持しつつ、特定の条件のもとで他者に作品の利用を許諾するための無料かつ標準化されたツールです。創作者の権利と情報共有の促進を両立するものです。

以下は、利用可能な6種類のCCライセンスです：

CC BY（表示）
クレジットさえすれば、改変・商用利用を含むあらゆる利用が可能です。
CC BY-SA（表示-継承）
CC BYと同様ですが、改変した作品も同じライセンスで公開する必要があります。
CC BY-ND（表示-改変禁止）
クレジットを条件に、改変せずそのままの形で再利用できます（商用利用も可）。
※選択がない場合、EMPブログではこのライセンスがデフォルトとなります。
CC BY-NC（表示-非営利）
クレジットを条件に、非営利目的での利用が可能です。
CC BY-NC-SA（表示-非営利-継承）
非営利かつ同じライセンスの下であれば改変可能です。
CC BY-NC-ND（表示-非営利-改変禁止）
最も制限が強く、改変は認められず、クレジット付きの非営利目的での配布のみ許可されます。

これらのライセンスにより、著者は自らの意図に応じて再利用の範囲を柔軟に設定でき、他者による活用や拡散を促進することができます。
